During the final day of testimony in the Alex Murdaugh double-murder trial, state prosecutors and a crime scene expert discredited the defense’s recent theories of unknown assailants being responsible for the killings of Murdaugh’s wife and son. The state’s crime scene analyst, Kenneth Kinsey, described previous testimony by the defense’s forensic experts as “preposterous,” particularly their suggestion that Murdaugh’s son was killed execution-style with a shotgun blast to the back of his head.
Alex Murdaugh continues to deny he is the killer
Kinsey also objected to a bullet trajectory analysis that claimed the shooter who killed Murdaugh’s wife was significantly shorter than the defendant. When asked if the evidence could support the defense’s theory of two shooters, Kinsey replied with a firm “Absolutely not.” He was the last of six witnesses called by state prosecutors in the trial, which has seen a total of 76 witnesses testify over five weeks.
The trial has focused on Alex Murdaugh, a once-respected and since-disbarred lawyer from a prominent Lowcountry family, who is accused of killing his wife and son to cover up his financial crimes. The jury is set to visit the crime scene before closing arguments and jury deliberations.
Defense alleges two shooters
The defense had suggested that the victims were killed by two shooters, but Kinsey dismissed these theories, stating that the defense’s crime scene analysts were too confident in their conclusions and relied on unvetted assumptions. The state called several other witnesses, including former law partners of Murdaugh, who portrayed him as a master manipulator who lied frequently to get what he wanted. Moreover, Alex Murdaugh has denied the accusations and insisted he did not kill his wife and son.
