Diane Downs, a 27-year-old mother, pulled over her car on the side of the road to kill her 3 children that were in the car with her. She believed if she killed her children her coworker that was having an affair with her would finally love her. Intending to kill all 3 children for this man and get away with it, here is how it went…
The leading up to
Diane was quite a rebellious kid through high school and even ended up marrying her high school sweetheart, Steve Downs. While with Steve she had 2 kids with him and one from another man. One year later after Diane had a child from another man Steve filed for a divorce.
Shortly after the divorce, Diane began working at a post office where she met a married coworker. The two had an affair but it didn’t last long because Diane wanted him to leave his wife for her. When the affair ended, one of the things he said to her is that he had no interest in being a dad. Diane now had a plan to kill her children in hopes to regain his attention.
Diane Downs And The Murder
On May 19, 1983, Diane executed her plan. She drove all 3 kids down Old Mohawk Road just outside of the city and shot all of her children. In her plan to make up her alibi she shot herself in her forearm. She then drove to the hospital very slowly to make sure the children were dead.
Diane arrived at the hospital and was very calm and had no emotions about what just happened. Police and hospital staff said, “Within 30 minutes we knew she was guilty by just talking to her”. She didn’t even shed one tear while at the hospital. One of the kids died and the other 2 were in critical condition.
Investigations and Accusations
Diane told the police she didn’t own a gun, but when the police ordered a search warrant for her house they saw otherwise. They also found a diary that provided all the evidence they needed, along with that blood spatter research that proved her alibi was all a lie. With this evidence, she was then arrested on Feb 28, 1984.
One of the kids that survived, Christie, regained her speech. When she was asked who shot her, she replied “My mom.”. Diane downs had tried to kill all 3 of her kids in hopes this man would give her attention. She shot them and drove slowly to the hospital because she wanted them to bleed out. It was all clear now what happened, and she was sentenced to life in prison.
